MERCEDES, Texas – The ‘wild horse and burro adoption’ is back in Mercedes.
It’s a two-day event happening at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Showgrounds. Visitors can place bids to adopt adult or young breeds. It’s all part of an initiative to removes excess animals from the range in a responsible way. This weekend there are 75 horses up for direct adoption.
A representative from the Bureau of Land Management says, “We have not enough forage and water on public lands out west. Desert like conditions. Most of the horses are in Nevada. We’re just trying to find good homes for them and just get them in to that good home and place.”
Purchasers must be able to provide proof of enclosed areas and the ability to care for the animals. The event will continue tomorrow, January the 12th from 8:00 am till noon.
