Elly Amlin, 9, is thrilled her family has increased by two.
“I’m happy they can be with us,” said Elly responding to a question by Hamilton County Probate Court Judge Ralph “Ted” Winkler asking how it felt to have several new siblings during adoption proceedings.
Emily Amlin, a resident of Delhi Township, completed the adoption of Adrian, 4, and Arianna, 7 on Sept. 27. They will join Elly and three other siblings in Amlin’s growing family.
“If there was an adoption Hall of Fame, you’d get in there,” said Winkler, who approved the adoption. “You’re doing so much to help children.”
Amlin’s involvement in foster care began more than a decade ago. It wasn’t long after she began taking steps to adopt children she felt a responsibility to help.
“I thought there was a need,” she said. “I felt I had the energy and resources.”
In 2007, Amlin adopted Kaley, 16, and Chloe, 14. She would later adopt Elly and Grace, 5.
Amlin said her faith has played a significant role in wanting to reach out to these youngsters.
“I believe we should all have some purpose here beyond ourselves,” she said. “My purpose involves taking care of (these) special children.
“It’s not always pretty, but I couldn’t ask for a better purpose.”
Amlin said her parents, David and Christy Amlin, were also a huge inspiration.
Christy and David adopted three boys in the late 1990s.
“I felt I needed to do something,” Christy said. “Instead of going out on the mission field, I felt I could do something right here.”
Christy was among friends and family gathered for the adoption proceedings.
David died in January, but Amlin said her father had had an opportunity to meet all of the children and even before the adoptions were finalized knew that Adrian and Arianna would eventually be a part of the family, she said.
“These kids are her whole life,” said neighbor Gary Hesse. “They are a joy to be around.”
A third-grade teacher at C.O. Harrison Elementary School, Amlin took the day of the adoption off to spend some family time with her new additions.
Her immediate plans are to make sure Adrian and Arianna are settled in. She then plans to continue her ongoing involvement with foster care.
