School Principal’s Viral Rant Accuses Countless Parents of Cheating – Fatherly

The massive college admissions scandal may have shocked the nation last month, but according to one Kentucky school principal, parents break the rules to help their kids get ahead more often than people realize. In a video that’s now going viral, Gerry Brooks accuses any parent who cheats of being just as bad as those arrested in the bribery scam.

“You know who’s not surprised about [the scandal]? Every educator in the whole world,” Brooks says, holding a magazine with Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman on the cover. “This kind of thing happens every day at schools.”

He goes on to explain, “You know what this is? A parent not agreeing with a policy or a rule, or sometimes even a law, so they do whatever they want because they think it’s best for their child.”

Brooks, the principal at Liberty Elementary School in Lexington, Ky., then gives some examples of cheating, from parents who sign their child’s reading log even though they didn’t actually read to the parents who lie about where they live so that their kid can go to a school that’s stronger academically or that has a better sports team.

With each example, including the overly competitive parents who “help” their kids with their science fair projects, Brooks says, “You know who else did that? Aunt Becky.”

Brooks ends his video, which now has over 8.5 million views since it was posted on April 9, by acknowledging that he knows he’ll get “flack” for comparing those people to the parents who paid millions of dollars to fake their children’s way into top colleges, like Loughlin and Huffman.

However, he says, “When you break rules or policies in front of your children…here’s what you’re saying to your child: ‘I know this is a rule but it doesn’t apply to me.”

And the comments section is full of teachers and parents alike who agree with Brooks’ sentiment. As one woman wrote, “Kids with no responsibility for anything become the adults who feel they need not take responsibility for anything!”
