The puppy abandoned with a heartbreaking note inside a restroom at McCarran International Airport this summer is about to be adopted by a local family.
Chewy was found inside a bathroom with a handwritten note left by his owner. The note tells the story of domestic abuse and the owner’s rush to escape her abuser.
The note reads: “My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford to get me on the flight,” adding that the puppy was also kicked by the owner’s boyfriend and she had no other option but to leave Chewy.
“He had a pretty good bump on the side of his head. He also had some really bad pain in his jaw. He yawned and there was just this gut-wrenching scream,” said Patricia Montano, the foster parent who has been caring for Chewy the past few months.

Montano said the 2-pound Chihuahua is now happy and healthy.
Chewy’s story garnered international attention – from the Washington Post to People.com and BBC News.
Thousands of people also applied wanting to adopt Chewy.
“I think his story was what touched everybody,” said Montano.
Chewy is now finally about to be adopted by a local family. Their identities are being kept secret at this point.

Patricia just wants everyone to know there are resources in the community to help – including Noah’s Animal House which is a boarding house that keeps sheltered women and children near their pets.
“I think he really set the stage for people to talk about domestic violence,” said Montano.
As for Chewy’s original owner – the one who left that heartbreaking note – she has not been found.
“No, she never came forward and I can see why – she was really in a horrible situation. I could see why she didn’t come forward but I think she’s seen that he’s OK and he’s a happy boy,” said Montano.
Connor & Millie’s Rescue – which has been taking care of Chewy the past few months – is hosting a fundraiser Sept. 30 at the Henderson Pavilion.
