President Muhammadu Buhari says it is the responsibility of the government to provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age in the country.

The president also said that any government that fails to provide the schools, teachers and teaching materials necessary for basic education is aiding and abetting crimes.

President Buhari who made this known in a thread if tweets posted on the presidency’ official Twitter handle on Wednesday, October 9, added that it is a crime for parents to keep their children out of school.

“Ensuring proper education during the first 9 years of schooling means that our children start off their lives with some discipline & education. They will be safeguarded from roaming the streets, and protected from all the evil influences that assail idle hands & idle minds,” Buhari said.

Legit.ng notes that the president was making reference to the Free Universal Basic Education Act.

President Buhari, therefore, enjoined the state governors to work with local government chairmen towards ensuring the provision of sound and quality basic education.

With a sound basic education, children will be better prepared to contribute positively to the development of the country.
